GPSSample is a free mobile app for Android 8+ devices facilitating rapid sampling for surveys and rapid assessments. Available in 6 languages (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Bahasa), simply change the phone to be in the desired language for GPSSample. In GPSSample, download study area maps for offline use, set up a study configuration in <10 minutes, and head out to the field. GPSSample has tiered roles, 4 ways to add or generate enumeration boundaries, and is easy to connect to ODK Collect, Kobo Toolbox, and Ona.
Version 1.0.0.107:
Teams can either download Mapbox's streets view or satellite view for offline use
Improved supervisor's and administrator's capacity to draw unique teams for a cluster. Only unassigned area can be assigned to a new team
GPSSample Decoder has a cluster summary page
GPSSample Decoder can accept multiple files from the same survey and compile into one output file
Version 1.0.0.106:
If a team needs to re-visit a household and a draft has been saved in ODK Collect or Kobo Toolbox, GPSSample can re-open or the same draft record for the household.
Added 3 subdirectory folders generated when exporting JSON from GPSSample: Configuration, Enumerated, Surveyed.
Shows notes for completed households if added during enumeration or data collection
Allows enumerator to easily start the next cluster if performing data collection role. Button to delete existing cluster and create a new cluster has been added.
Version 1.0.0.105:
Within a cluster, the supervisor or admin can now review teams created in an overview map
Teams receive warnings when walking the boundaries if there will be intersections in the cluster boundary
Added a pop-up screen for supervisors and admins to update the cluster boundary if necessary before sampling
Added a fix for Android 14 operating systems which caused GPSSample to crash upon opening the app
Updated French terms in app
Can add point datasets with features (e.g., head of household name, location’s address) that will be visible during enumeration and data collection
Version 1.0.0.103:
Added a fourth method of creating a cluster, by tapping 1 point on a map and specifying the width/height of the square in kilometers
Added Bahasa language and updated key terms in Spanish and French translations.
User can export either to default location (internal storage->GPSSample) where a GPSSample folder is auto-generated or choose a different location to save the file to on the device
Using the GPSSample Decoder, the encrypted study configuration, and configuration password, teams use the Decoder to extract the GPSSample data. Output includes an Excel document with all GPSSample data from enumerated, sampled, and surveyed households and points of interest. The Decoder also creates a decrypted configuration file (JSON) and photos taken. The GPSSample Decoder is available to download for Macs and Windows computers; check out the latest compatible release.
Using the Excel spreadsheet extracted using the GPSSample Decoder for a study, the Quarto Analysis code generates a summary HTML report using RStudio. A benefit of the HTML format is that the summary reports’ maps are interactive. Download the Quarto code in your desired language and place the Quarto code and icons in the same folder.
